8 Myths About Online Tarot Readings Totally Busted

I’ve been offering tarot readings professionally for years, and it still shocks me how many people show up convinced an online reading will not work. I hear it all the time. “It will not feel real.” “It will not land.” “I need to be in the room.”

Absolute bollocks.

People assume the screen weakens the whole thing, but within minutes, they realise it works the same way therapy does. Some people thrive online. Some prefer in person. Both can be powerful. These worries usually come from myths about online tarot readings and confusion about how a tarot reading online actually works.

During COVID, I had therapy entirely online, and it still helped me. I have had great in-person sessions too. The difference was never the room. It was comfort and privacy.

It’s the same with tarot. I’ve read for people who were in cafes, uni common rooms, bedrooms and offices. I’ve read for people online who would never book in person because of anxiety, disability, travel or the stress of being seen.

Online gives people access they would never have otherwise. And when the connection lands, it lands hard.

From my side, the work stays pretty much the same. In person, you shuffle the deck. Online, I shuffle on camera. In person, I set the room up beautifully. Online, I just need to ensure that what you see looks beautiful (or at least tidy), and that I am grounded.

The cards do not care about postcodes. Some people feel safer in person. Some feel safer online. Both are valid.

What matters is whether you can relax enough to explore what is going on.

These myths get in the way, so let us pull them apart.

Myth 1: Online Tarot Readings Are Less Accurate

Why People Think This

People assume intuition only works if we are in the same room. They think I need to read your body language or feel energy in person. If you’re unsure about tarot already, the online part feels like one leap too many. You are not just trusting the cards and the reader. You are trusting the tech too.

People talk about intuition like it’s Wi Fi, assuming it only works if we are inches apart. Or maybe they had a good in-person reading once and assume that is the only format that ever works.

What Actually Affects Accuracy

Accuracy comes from clarity, honesty and presence. If your question is clear and you are open about what’s really going on, the cards land. I’m the same reader online or in person. The deck’s the same. The difference is your comfort.

Some of my strongest readings have been online because people feel safer at home. They open up faster. They drop the mask sooner. That makes the reading sharper, not weaker. If you are anxious about the format, it might get in the way for a moment. That’s why I always check in, talk you through the plan and help you settle.

Once we’re grounded, the quality is the same. A tarot reading online doesn’t lose accuracy because the format has changed.

Myth 2: You Have To Touch The Cards Yourself

Why This Belief Exists

A woman conducts an online tarot reading, adding a mystical touch to the room's ambiance.

In person, I’ll often ask people to shuffle the deck themselves and pick a pile. It’s easy to assume your physical touch somehow activates the reading.

Films and TV lean into that idea with dramatic shuffles and dramatic choices.

How Online Shuffling Works

Online, you’re still involved. I shuffle on camera so you can see everything. I split the deck into three piles. You choose the pile. You tell me where to place the cards. Your choices still guide the reading. My hands just do the practical part.

Whether we’re in person, and you touch the deck, or we’re online and I do, the right cards show up, every time. Intention matters more than whether your hands are on some bits of fucking cardboard. If you want more control, you can choose the spread or tell me when to stop shuffling.

In short, online tarot readings work the same way because the process stays the same.

Myth 3: Online Readers Are More Likely To Be Fake Or Scammy

Why This Myth Spread

Social media is full of fake accounts, stolen photos and dodgy promises. You see the worst of the internet every day, so it is easy to assume an online tarot reader is unsafe.

There are scam readers in person, too. You just don’t see them pop up on your phone as often.

How To Spot A Legit Reader

Online work makes it easier to see who’s real. Before you book, you can read their website, check their reviews and see if their voice feels genuine. Look for consistency. Look for boundaries. Look for someone who does not make wild, outlandish promises.

Personally, when I check reviews for any business, I look for patterns. Do all the reviews sound the same? Are the profiles real? Are they reviewing random places across the world on the same day? If so, that sets off some big red flags.

I offer both online and in-person readings. You can see me, hear me and read my work before you book. A tarot reading online is not riskier than in person. You just need to vet the reader.

Myth 4: Tech Problems Will Ruin The Reading

What People Fear

People imagine frozen screens, lagging audio and awkward “can you hear me?” moments. They think it will feel like a bad work call.

What Actually Happens

Tech issues are rare. If Wi Fi drops, I switch to mobile data. If there’s a lag, we can easily repeat what we missed. We sort it and move on.

And in-person readings can be disrupted too. I’ve read in places where the electrics tripped, and we sat in darkness until I found a battery light and carried on. Real life is messy. A good reading does not fall apart because something flickered.

Online tarot readings keep going because the connection is not about the tech.

Myth 5: Online Tarot Is The Same As An App

Why People Confuse The Two

If you’ve used tarot apps, it is easy to assume an online reading works the same way. Cards pop up. Meanings appear. Words show on a screen.

But that’s not the case.

What A Real Session Does Differently

Apps give keywords. A real reading is a conversation. You explain what is going on. I respond. I link the cards. I slow down when something hits. I adjust when something doesn’t land.

If you’re confused, we can pull clarifiers. If something feels off, we can reframe the question. Apps can’t do that. They can’t hold nuance or respond to your actual life.

Because a proper tarot reading online, or in person, is tailored to you, not a template.

Myth 6: Online Readings Cannot Go Deep

Why People Believe This

People think deep emotional work needs a special room, a therapist office or a sacred space. So when it happens on a laptop, they worry something is missing.

How Depth Works Online

Depth comes from honesty, not location. Many people open up more at home because they’re comfortable. You’re warm. You’re relaxed. And you can cry without worrying about being seen on the way out.

I work online with people dealing with breakups, burnout, family conflict, identity shifts and major transitions. None of that’s shallow. Obviously, if screens drain you, in-person might be better. But online can go just as deep.

Online tarot readings reach depth because you feel safe.

Myth 7: Online Readings Are Only For Young People

Who Actually Books Online

People assume online readings are just Generation Z. That’s not true in the slightest. I read for people in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties. Some love tech. Some tolerate it. Age has nothing to do with it.

Why Local People Still Choose Online

Plenty of local clients choose online because it’s easier. If you work full time, live further out, have kids, deal with anxiety or have mobility issues, online might fit better for you. You can finish work, make a cup of tea and join the call.

Online tarot readings suit real-life schedules.

Myth 8: Online Readings Are Less Private

Why People Worry About Privacy

People hear online and think it’s going to be public. They picture live streams or social media comment readings. They worry about recordings being shared or details floating around.

What Confidentiality Looks Like Online

But a private online reading is between you and your reader. I don’t share your story with anyone. If we record the session, it will only be with your prior consent, and only you will get the file at the end.

To recieve the call, you can choose a private room, use headphones and set boundaries with the people you live with. Many people feel more private online because they don’t have to walk into a shop or explain where they are going to friends or family.

A tarot reading online can feel safer than in person, and a good reader will make sure they make you feel safe and seen, whatever the context.

Final Thoughts On the Myths About Online Tarot Readings

Online tarot readings certainly aren’t a weaker version of the real thing. They’re a valid and powerful way to work with the cards. Deep insight does not rely on us being in the same physical space. It relies on honesty, presence and a reader who actually listens.

Sometimes, in person may feel better. Sometimes online will. You deserve to get to choose the format that supports you instead of letting old myths make the choice for you.

If you’re curious about how a tarot reading online might feel, try it. Be in your own space with your cup of tea and your comfort. Bring your questions. Bring your scepticism. Bring your whole self. The cards work the same either way.

Online or in person, you deserve a reading that takes you seriously, gives you space to breathe and helps you figure out your next steps.
