3 Card Tarot Spreads
All 30 and When to Use Each
Three-card spreads are the workhorses of tarot. Fast, focused, and genuinely useful for most situations. If you’re new to spreads, start here. If you’re experienced, you’ll probably come back to them anyway. There are 30 of them here, each for one specific question, and they’re all on this page with their three positions written out so you can pick one and go.

How to read a 3 card tarot spread
Decide the spread before you shuffle. Lay the three cards left to right. For each one, look at the picture first and say what you see, out loud if you can, before you reach for a meaning. Then ask what that has to do with the position it’s sitting in: Past, or Obstacle, or Fear. Then read the three together as one sentence. Finish with one thing you’ll actually do this week. If a position feels empty, check your question before you add a card. Better questions beat extra cards.

Three-card spreads for beginners
If you’re new, start with Past / Present / Future or Situation / Obstacle / Advice. The positions are questions you already understand, so all your attention goes on the card. Three cards will teach you more than ten, because you have to actually read each one instead of skimming. When one of these stops surprising you, pick a spread from the decision or feelings groups with a position you’d never have thought to ask.
Every spread above has its own page with a diagram and the questions to ask. And if you want to practise with other people instead of on your own, that’s what Simply Tarot Membership is for.
Where to start, and where to go next
There is no right order to any of this. Pick whichever one matches the thing you are stuck on, and come back for the rest when you want it. If you have never touched a deck before, What Is Tarot Reading? is the gentlest way in.
What Is Tarot Reading?
This is the honest version. I cover what tarot does, what it does not do, and why I am not going to predict your future.
All 78 Card Meanings
Every one of the 78 cards has a page of its own. Each covers upright and reversed, what the card does in a reading, and what I make of it. Start with whatever card is sitting in front of you.
Tarot Spreads
The spreads here are sorted by what you are actually asking. Pick the question, take the layout, and every position comes explained.
The Major Arcana
These are the twenty-two everybody recognises, The Fool through to The World. They carry the weight of a reading, and they are the ones people get nervous about.
The Fool’s Journey
This reads the Major Arcana as one story from beginning to end. If the majors feel like twenty-two separate things to memorise, start here instead.
The Minor Arcana
The other fifty-six cards are where most of the real detail lives. This is the everyday texture of a reading, and it is the part that gets skipped.
The Four Suits
Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles each have a job. Knowing the suit gets you most of the way to a meaning before you have learned a single individual card.
The Elements
Fire, water, air and earth sit underneath the suits. This is the one you want when a reading comes out heavy on one of them and you need to know what that is telling you.
Numbers in Tarot
The number on a card does its own work, Ace through to Ten. Learn what each one is doing and you can read a card you have never seen before.
The Court Cards
Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings stop more people dead than any other part of the deck. They are not always a person, and that is usually the bit nobody explains properly.
How I Read
This is how I actually read, and why. It is worth a look if you want to know what you are getting before you book anything.
